Parksville weather

Parksville and Oceanside weather, and what it does to a roof

Environment Canada's 1971–2000 normals for Parksville average 1,314.2 mm of precipitation a year, with July and August each under 40 mm of rain. Winter storms bring strong east-southeasterly winds to the Bowser and Deep Bay coast, and summer drought feeds wildfire risk in Douglas-fir forest. An Oceanside roof needs to shed rain, hold in wind and resist embers.

Parksville's climate normals

Wikipedia quotes Environment Canada figures for a Parksville station, citing the 1971–2000 Canadian Climate Normals: 1,314.2 mm of precipitation a year, a January daily mean of 3.0 °C and a July daily mean of 16.8 °C. The station's records run from 32.0 °C down to −15.6 °C. Wikipedia classes Parksville as warm-summer Mediterranean (Csb), with July and August each getting less than 40 mm of rain.

Up the road, the Little Qualicum Hatchery station, quoted on the Qualicum Beach page without a normals period, shows 1,082.9 mm of precipitation, 35.2 cm of snow, 172.4 rainy days and 7.9 snowy days a year. The same page says 80 to 85% of the year's precipitation falls between October and April.

Long Oceanside winters of rain

With most of the year's water arriving from October to April, an Oceanside roof can stay wet for weeks. That's when moss settles into asphalt and cedar, and when tired shingles let water find the decking.

Interlock® aluminum takes on no water and gives moss nothing to root into. Panels lock on four sides, with fasteners covered by the next course. Fir needles and arbutus leaves still gather in valleys and gutters, so a fall cleanup is still part of owning the house.

Winter storms on the Bowser and Deep Bay coast

The Regional District of Nanaimo's 2022 wildfire plan for Electoral Area H says winter is the windiest season, with storms bringing strong east-southeasterly winds, while "Winds are subdued in the summer months." Waterfront lots from Nanoose Bay to Deep Bay take those storms with little shelter.

An Interlock® roof is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph), installed to manufacturer specification. Aluminum cannot rust, so salt spray on a beachfront lot doesn't eat at it; the metal forms its own oxide layer.

Wildfire plans for Parksville's neighbours

The Town of Qualicum Beach adopted its final Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan on June 26, 2024. The RDN's 2022 plan for Bowser, Qualicum Bay and Deep Bay says "the WUI occupies approximately one-third of EA H" and that its forests are "mostly composed of Douglas-fir." The Nanoose Bay plan says most of Electoral Area E can be considered part of the interface, describes Douglas-fir forest that "breaks open into arbutus parkland in the driest places," and notes severe summer water shortages. The Area H plan records prolonged drought through July and August of 2018.

Interlock® roofs: Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, on heavy-gauge aluminum that won't catch fire. No roof is fireproof. The FireSmart BC guide's advice is to keep gutters free of debris and put fine non-combustible screens on vents, since those are where embers get in.

How we specify an Interlock® roof for Parksville

We measure Oceanside roofs on a Zoom call or at the house, write the specification from that visit, and send our own crew to install.

  • Wind rating and fastening to manufacturer specification for exposed waterfront lots.
  • Snow guards over entrances and decks, decided at the estimate.
  • Ice damming is a warranty exclusion; we check attic ventilation at the estimate.
  • Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly, plus a gutter and vent review.

Parksville questions, answered

Does it snow enough in Parksville to need snow guards?

Snow is light most years; the Little Qualicum Hatchery figures show 35.2 cm a year over 7.9 snowy days. But when it falls on a metal roof it slides off in one go, so we still plan snow guards over entrances, decks and walkways. That keeps a sheet of snow off whoever is below.

My Nanoose Bay house is surrounded by arbutus and fir. Is a metal roof enough?

It helps, but it isn't the whole answer. The RDN's Nanoose Bay plan treats most of the area as interface. Aluminum won't ignite, but FireSmart BC puts the first effort into the 1.5 metres around the house, clean gutters and screened vents. We look at those edges with you at the estimate.

Is a waterfront Qualicum Beach roof harder on metal?

Not on aluminum. There is no iron in it to rust, so salt spray off the Strait of Georgia doesn't corrode it. The bigger concern on an exposed lot is wind, which is why the installation follows manufacturer specification.
