Built for British Columbia

Parksville metal roofing: a roof that cannot rust.

BC is a coastline, a rainforest, a snow belt and a fire zone, sometimes on the same drive. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each.

Salt air

Aluminum cannot rust

There is no iron in aluminum, so there is nothing to rust. It forms its own thin oxide layer, which re-forms if the surface is scratched. That is why it is the metal for oceanfront homes, island cabins and anywhere the wind carries salt.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

Under ASTM E108 a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel. On our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood, and the aluminum itself does not ignite. Ask us to quote the assembly if your home backs onto forest or grassland.

Reflectance

Reflectance, rated colour by colour

Most Alunar® colours are rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC), which publishes each colour's solar reflectance (0.25 to 0.44 when new) and thermal emittance (0.83 to 0.86). Lighter and metallic colours reflect more. The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years.

Energy

Colour and summer heat

Lighter colours absorb less summer sun than dark ones. What that saves depends on climate, colour, insulation and attic ventilation, so we don't quote a figure.

Solar

The roof to put solar on

A solar array lasts 25 to 30 years. Put it on an asphalt roof and the panels often have to come off and go back on when the roof wears out underneath them. On an Interlock roof they come off at the end of their own life, not the roof's. Standing Seam takes clamp mounts with no holes drilled; the other profiles use mounting hardware made for metal roofing. At roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre the roof leaves more of the structure's capacity for the array, and your solar installer confirms the framing.

Wind

Locked on four sides

Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides, with no exposed fastener for a storm to work at. Wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification.

Coastline: Province of British Columbia, Coastal Marine Strategy ↗ gives "more than 26,000 kilometres"; federal mapping gives 25,725 km. Product figures are the manufacturer's: interlockroofing.com ↗

    Why aluminum roofing, for Parksville

Beach air, long rains and coastal forest. How a Parksville roof copes.

    Beachfront

    Sandy bays and salt spray

Parksville is known for the sandy beaches of Parksville Bay and Craig Bay, and Rathtrevor Beach sits on its edge. Plenty of homes here are a short walk from salt water. There is no iron in aluminum, so the salt has nothing to rust; the metal seals itself with a thin film of oxide.

    Rainfall

    About 1,300 mm a year

Environment Canada's 1971–2000 normals for the Parksville station average 1,314.2 mm of precipitation a year. A roof here is wet for months at a time. Interlock® panels lock together on four sides with hidden fasteners, and aluminum gives moss nowhere to take hold.

    Interface

    Forest on the Oceanside edges

The Regional District's 2022 wildfire plan for Nanoose Bay describes Douglas-fir forest that breaks open into arbutus parkland in the driest places, and the plan for Bowser and Deep Bay puts about a third of that area in the wildland-urban interface. Aluminum does not ignite, and Class A is available as a complete assembly. No roof is fireproof.

    Wind

    Weather straight off the Strait

From Parksville Bay to Deep Bay, the coast faces the Strait of Georgia, and winter storms reach the shore across open water. Installed to manufacturer specification, an Interlock® roof is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph). Panels that interlock on all four sides give the wind no loose edge to work at.

    Recycled

    Up to 95% recycled aluminum

And the last tear-off your house is likely to need.

    Straight answers

Metal shingles in Parksville: answers up front.

    All of our answers ↗

    Which communities does parksvilleroofing.com cover?

The City of Parksville first, including Parksville Bay, Craig Bay and the neighbourhoods along the Englishman River, and the rest of Oceanside: Qualicum Beach, Nanoose Bay, Bowser and Deep Bay. Nanaimo, the Comox Valley and the rest of Vancouver Island are covered at vancouverislandroofing.com. Same company, same crews.

Do you install metal shingles in Parksville and Qualicum Beach?

Yes. Interlock® Slate, Interlock® Cedar Shingle, Interlock® Shake and Interlock® Mediterranean Tile are all interlocking aluminum shingles, and we install Interlock® Standing Seam and solid copper as well. Your roof needs a slope of 3/12 or more. We replace old asphalt, cedar and tile roofs; we don't patch or reshingle with asphalt.

How do Oceanside's wildfire plans affect my roof?

Qualicum Beach adopted a Community Wildfire Resiliency Plan on June 26, 2024, and the Regional District of Nanaimo's 2022 plans cover Nanoose Bay, Bowser and Deep Bay, where the forests are mostly Douglas-fir. Aluminum itself won't burn, and on our roofs Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly. Embers can still reach gutters and vents, so we look at those with you.

Do I need a building permit for a new roof in Parksville?

In the city, the City of Parksville's Building department issues permits under its Building Bylaw. Qualicum Beach issues its own. In Nanoose Bay, Bowser and Deep Bay, the Regional District of Nanaimo states that "Building permits are required for any new construction, alteration, addition or demolition of a structure." None of those pages addresses re-roofing directly, so we confirm with the right office for your address.

What does a metal roof cost in Parksville?

Our metal roof cost page gives price ranges by profile from our own BC contracts. Because structure and other conditions differ from house to house, those figures are a rough guide only. A roof consultation at your home or on Zoom is needed for an accurate price.

What does "Parksville's Best Roof®" mean?

Best Roof®, a registered trademark of I.E.L. Manufacturing Ltd., is the name we give the Interlock® roof. "Parksville's Best Roof®" is that same Interlock® aluminum roof, installed in Parksville and Oceanside by our BC company's own crews. Read it as a brand, not as a ranking.
